AI and platform maturity: the foundations that help AI deliver

Abstract

AI has spread rapidly across development and delivery practices, with the benefits teams report differing widely. The question worth asking is what separates the teams seeing real gains from those left with more noise than value. Drawing on Octopus Deploy's Future of Platform Engineering research report, alongside the broader AI literature, this talk makes the case that the platform foundation beneath AI determines whether it pays off.

We found that the more mature platforms are also the ones reporting positive AI impact on software delivery speed and stability, organizational performance, and strong positive associations with job satisfaction and leadership direction. This aligns with DORA's finding that AI amplifies existing strengths when added to a well-designed system, compounding its value.

The more interesting finding is where that impact does and doesn't reach. Teams reporting a positive impact of AI on delivery speed and stability, legacy modernization, and organizational performance are more likely to be high performers (i.e., delivering on goals). But that same benefit did not extend to how work actually feels: reported AI impact showed no comparable improvement in work-life balance or wellbeing (i.e., burnout). Therefore, the gains are landing on delivery and organizational outcomes, but not on the people actually doing the work, which is worth noting.
